I'd rather see a sermon..

I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day,
I'd rather one would walk with me than merely show the way;
The eye's a better pupil, more willing than the ear,
Fine counsel is confusing, but example's always clear;
The best of all the preachers are the men who live their creeds,
For to see good put in action is what everybody needs;
I soon can learn to do it if you'll let me see it done,
I can watch your hands in action, but your tongue too fast may run;
The lectures you deliver may be very wise and true,
But I'd rather get my lessons by observing what you do;
I may not understand the high advice that you may give,
But there's no misunderstanding how you act and how you live.

Cheerful Givers Print E-mail

2 Cor 9:7 “So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.”

Here we have proper directions to be observed about the right manner of bestowing charity. It should be bountifully. Men who expect a good return at harvest are not wont to pinch and spare in sowing their seed. Giving should be deliberate, “each one as he purposes in his heart.” Works of charity, like other good works, should be done with thought and design. It should be freely given, “not grudgingly or of necessity,” but cheerfully. Persons sometimes will give merely to satisfy the demands of those who ask their charity, and what they give is in a manner squeezed or forced from them, and this unwillingness spoils all they do.

We are given good encouragement to perform this work of charity. They themselves would not lose what they gave in charity. What is given to the poor is far from being lost, as the precious seed that is cast onto the ground is not lost, for it will spring up and bear fruit. The shower shall receive it again with increase. God loves a cheerful giver. Can a man be a loser by doing that with which God is pleased?
