Problems with Darwin

T-EvolutionRing
Abraham Kriel
A layman's misgivings

It is true that reality consists  of various departments, and that no individual can be an expert in every one of them. On the other hand it is just as true that these departments are not found in complete isolation, and that any one of them may influence various others. And Darwinism indeed has implications in fields which are of great importance even to non-biologists.
Whenever any topic is under discussion it is important to know exactly what it is, and especially to avoid confusion with something else which is only partly identical with it. In the present context a clear distinction is needed between the wide concept of “evolution” and the specific theory which today is commonly known as “Darwinism”. Darwin was not the first to propagate the general theory of evolution...

What we Believe

what_we_believe

We confess the Holy Trinity – God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit (Mt. 28:19; Mk. 12:29). We take a strong stand on the Deity, eternal self-existence and virgin birth of the Lord Jesus (Jn. 20:28; Heb. 1:8-9; 1 Jn. 5:20). We believe in the divine inspiration and inerrancy of the Bible in the original languages, the need for all people to be born again spiritually to enter the kingdom of God, justification by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (Jn. 3:3-8; Rom. 3:22-24; Eph. 1:7) and also the doctrine of sanctification by being filled with the Holy Spirit to become bold witnesses and disciples of the Lord Jesus (Acts. 15:8-9; 1 Thes. 4:3,7-8; Heb. 12:14; 1 Pet. 1:15-16). We firmly believe that the whole counsel of God has been revealed to us in His Word. We believe in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ (Acts. 1:10-11; 1 Cor. 15:22-23, 51-52; 1 Thes. 4:15-18; Rev. 1:7).

Testimony of Sanctification

The Life That Wins
By
Charles G. Trumbull

(Written in 1911)

There is only one life that wins and that is the life of Jesus Christ.  Every man may have that life; every man may live that life.

I do not mean that every man may be Christ-like; I mean something very much better than that.  I do not mean that a man may always have Christ's help.  I mean something better than that.  I do not mean that a man have power from Christ.  I mean something very much better than power.   And I do not mean that a man shall be merely saved from his sins and kept from sinning.  I mean something better than even that victory.

To explain what I do mean, I must simply tell you a very personal and recent experience of my own.  I think I am correct when I say that I have known more than most men know about failure, about betrayals and dishonoring of Christ, about disobedience to heavenly visions, about conscious failing short of that which I saw other men attaining, and which I knew Christ was expecting of me.

Unhealthy Revival Excitement

When the feelings are greatly excited, the will yields to them almost of necessity, I do not mean that it does absolutely by necessity, but that an excited state of feeling has so much power over the will that it almost certainly controls it. Now the mind is never religious when it is actuated by the feelings, for this is following impulse. Whatever the feelings are, if the soul gives itself up to be controlled by feelings rather than by the law and gospel of God, as truth lies revealed in the intelligence, it is not a religious state of mind.

Now, just so much excitement is important in revivals as is requisite to secure the fixed and thorough attention of the mind to the truth, and no more. When excitement goes beyond this, it is always dangerous. When excitement is very great, so as really to carry the will, the subjects of this excitement invariably deceive themselves. They get the idea that they are religious in proportion as they are governed by their feelings. They are conscious of feeling deeply, and of acting accordingly, and because they do feel. They are conscious of being sincerely actuated by their feelings. This they regard as true religion. Whereas, if they are really governed by their feelings as distinguished from their intelligence, they are not religious at all.  READ CHAPTER...

CALLED UNTO HOLINESS

Ruth Paxson

Tacken from CHAPTER ONE - ONENESS WITH CHRIST

The twin word for holiness in Scripture is that precious word sanctification. Let us listen to what GOD says regarding His will and His calling for us. "For this is the will of God, even your sanctification" (I Thessalonians 4:3). "For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness" (I Thessalonians 4:7). CHRIST prayed for our sanctification. "Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth... And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also may be sanctified through the truth" (John 17:17, 19). It was the provision that GOD made in the gift of the HOLY SPIRIT as our Sanctifier. "God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth" (II Thessalonians 2:13). In Ephesians, where we have the deepest truths given us in all the Word of GOD regarding therelationship of the Christian to CHRIST, the favorite word for the Christian is "saint." Do you like to be called that? Everyone of us is either a sinner or a saint in the sight of GOD. Perhaps it would make some of us very angry, if someone called us a sinner. But would we resent it almost as much to be called a saint? We must be one or the other. It makes a tremendous demand upon you and me to be called a saint. But that is what the Lord, the Head of the Church, calls those who have been united to Him and have become part of His body. Then, if we are saints, we certainly should live as saints. This was His purpose for us beforethere was ever a world or anyone in it. "According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy" (Ephesians 1:4). Think of it! "Before the foundation of the world" you, if you are in CHRIST, were chosen to be holy, even as He is holy.

The Will of God

George Muller – Men of  Faith  Series

Many asked Mr. Muller how he sought to know the will of God, in that nothing was undertaken, not even the smallest expenditure, without feeling certain he was in God’s will.  In the following words he gave his answer:

1.  I seek at the beginning to get my heart into such a state that it has no will of its own in regard to a given matter. Nine-tenths of the difficulties are overcome when our hearts are ready to do the Lord’s will, whatever it may be.  When one is truly in this state, it is usually but a little way to the knowledge of what His will is.
2.  Having done this, I do not leave the result to feeling or simple impressions. If so, I make myself  liable to great delusions.

3.  I seek the will of the Spirit of God through or in connection with the Word of GodThe Spirit and the Word must be combined. If I look to the Spirit alone without the Word, I lay myself open to great delusions also.
4.  And next I take into account providential circumstances.
These plainly indicate God’s will in connection with His Word and Spirit.
5.  1 ask God in prayer to reveal His will to me aright.
6.  Thus through prayer to God, the study of the Word and reflection,
I come to a deliberate judgment according to the best of my ability and knowledge, and if my mind is thus at peace, and continues so after two or three more petitions, I proceed accordingly. In trivial matters and in transactions involving most important issues, I have found this method always effective."

A Right Conception of Sin

Its Relation to Right Thinking and Right Living

by Richard S. Taylor (1945) Beacon Hill Press, an excerpt from Chapter 6 “The Atonement and a Sinning Religion

To be superficial in our conception of faith will lead to much superficiality in practical Christian work. Indeed, there is a direct connection between the loose theology we have been discussing and many modern methods of evangelism. Those methods of getting converts which we condemn as inexcusably shallow are but the natural consequences of those insufficient ideas of God's method of dealing with sin in the individual heart. Because many preachers do not realize the importance of the great, supernatural work wrought by God within and upon the nature they of course do not emphasize a thorough repentance, earnest seeking, or make any mention of the witness of the Spirit as being a universal privilege and necessity. Thus their regeneration is an anemic variety, consisting only of that change within the person which makes him willing to become religious; and their conception of conversion becomes a mere matter of acceptance. The chief change which takes place is one's standing before God. The cry is, "Believe! Believe! Your sins were forgiven away back there on the cross; the work is all done, all you need to do is accept it."

A WARNING AGAINST UNBELIEF

By F.B. Meyer Chapter 9 of Way Into the Holiest

They could not enter in because of unbelief. See how unbelief raises a barrier which shuts us out of blessing. A fortune may have been left you, but if you do not believe the intelligence and apply for it, you will not profit by it. A regiment of angels may be passing by your home, with blessings in their hands that might enrich you forever, but if you do not believe the tidings that they are on the march, you will not go out to greet or welcome them.
A noble character may rear itself in the neighbourhood in which you live, or the society in which you move; but if you do not believe in it, you will derive no stimulus or comfort from its genial and helpful influence. So whatever Christ may be, and however near, He will be nothing to you unless you have learned to trust Him.

Does God Always Answer Prayer?
- A.W. Tozer

does_God_always_answer_prayer

CONTRARY TO POPULAR OPINION, the cultivation of a psychology of uncritical belief is not an unqualified good, and if carried too far it may be a positive evil. The whole world has been booby-trapped by the devil, and the deadliest trap of all is the religious one. Error never looks so innocent as when it is found in the sanctuary.

I prayed for faith and thought that some day faith would come down and strike me like
lightning. But faith did not seem to come. One day I read in the tenth chapter of
Romans,  "Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God."
I had up to this time closed my Bible and prayed for faith.
I now opened my Bible and began to study, and faith has been growing ever since.

PRAYER AND FAITH

EM Bounds
Chapter 5 from his book: The Necessity of Prayer
"A dear friend of mine who was quite a lover of the chase, told me the following story: 'Rising early one morning,' he said, 'I heard the baying of a score of deerhounds in pursuit of their quarry. Looking away to abroad, open field in front of me, I saw a young fawn making its way across, and giving signs, moreover, that its race was well-nigh run. Reaching the rails of the enclosure, it leaped over and crouched within ten feet from where I stood. A moment later two of the hounds came over, when the fawn ran in my direction and pushed its head between my legs. I lifted the little thing to my breast, and, swinging round and round, fought off the dogs. I felt, just then, that all the dogs in the West could not, and should not capture that fawn after its weakness had appealed to my strength.' So is it, when human helplessness appeals to Almighty God. Well do I remember when the hounds of sin were after my soul, until, at last, I ran into the arms of Almighty God." -- A. C. DIXON.

IN any study of the principles, and procedure of prayer, of its activities and enterprises, first place, must, of necessity, be given to faith. It is the initial quality in the heart of any man who essays to talk to the Unseen. He must, out of sheer helplessness, stretch forth hands of faith. He must believe, where he cannot prove. In the ultimate issue, prayer is simply faith, claiming its natural yet marvellous prerogatives -- faith taking possession of its illimitable inheritance. True godliness is just as true, steady, and persevering in the realm of faith as it is in the province of prayer. Moreover: when faith ceases to pray, it ceases to live.

Read Holiness Literature - J.O. McClurkan

From his book: How to Keep Sanctified

Keep supplied with a variety of the many excellent papers and books devoted to holiness.  Merely skipping over them will not yield much profit, but thoughtful, prayerful study will find something new, stimulative, and helpful in each.  If you can purchase but one book, let that be “The Christian’s Secret of a Happy Life.”  Next to the Bible, it is the best book that I can recommend.  The gifted authoress is not so clear and radical in her doctrinal statements as some, yet it is the best book that I know of, except the Bible, to strengthen, settle, and establish you after you are sanctified.  It is not the best book to lead you into the experience, but it will throw a flood of light on how to keep it.
Neal Dow said that Maine was carried for prohibition by sowing it down knee-deep with prohibition literature.  By careful reading and wise distribution of the best holiness books and papers you can remove much of the woeful ignorance now afflicting the people on this subject.

The Importance of Personal Soul Winning

RA Torrey

"He first findeth his own brother Simon…. And he brought him to Jesus."–John 1:41,42.

The one who brought his brother to Jesus was Andrew. We are not told that Andrew ever preached a sermon. If he did, the Holy Spirit did not think it worth putting on record. But this brother whom he brought to Jesus preached a sermon that led three thousand people to Jesus in one day.

Where would Simon Peter’s sermon have been if it had not been for Andrew’s personal work? The most important kind of Christian work is personal work. We envy the men who stand on the platform and speak to great crowds, but God pays more attention to the man who sits down with a single soul.

Misapprehensions About Holiness

Samuel Chadwick - Tacken from his book The Way to Pentecost

There is a strange mistake abroad that holiness is something quite optional. It is regarded as desirable for certain people and in special circumstances, but its claims are by no means universal. The preachers sometimes speak of it as an alternative way to Heaven, but as both ways get there, the routes do not really matter. Holiness is regarded as an emotional luxury, if not as a spiritual fad. Its claims are deemed to be emotional rather than ethical, optional rather than imperative. There is little exposition of its character, and still less insistence upon its urgency; consequently, few seek to enter into the experience or take seriously the solemn words of Holy Scripture. Many take it for granted that if it is necessary it will come to them in due course without any concern of theirs. Such slackness accounts for much of the backsliding among believers. The Christian calling is one that demands "all diligence" and "earnest heed." Those who fail to seek after holiness "fall short of the grace of God," give opportunity to "the roots of bitterness to spring up," and become secular and worldly, like Esau, who bartered his spiritual inheritance for material good.

Another mistake made by many earnest Christians about holiness is that it comes by a gradual growth in grace and a steady progress of spiritual discipline. They are always growing toward it, but they never get into it, always struggling and striving to attain, but never entering into possession. The positive expectation is always seen to be afar off, and they die without having possessed. The hopeful future never becomes the positive now. The time never comes that calls for a definite step and a positive act of faith But holiness does not come by growth; neither is it identified with growth. Growth is a process of life; holiness is the gift of abundant life. Growth is the result of health; holiness is health. Holiness implies a crisis, a new experience, a transformed life. It is not an achievement or an attainment, but a gift of grace in the Holy Ghost. It comes not by works, but of faith.

Not a few good people mix up things that differ. They confuse cleaning with maturity, motive with achievement, love with blamelessness, and the perfection of grace with the perfection of the resurrection glory. People who ought to know blunder hopelessly over these things. Perhaps the confusion that is most common and most senseless is that which persists in associating perfection with finality. There are many people who seem to be afraid lest they should come to a point at which there will be no more room for improvement. They need not distress themselves. ever their best friends being judges; but really such shallow and foolish thinking is without excuse. Love never exhausts its inheritance or reaches its limit in being made perfect. Health never hinders growth. The perfection of efficiency is surely not final but primary. No doctrine of the Bible has been stated with greater care, and if any man wills to possess he need not err as to the way.

ENTIRE SANCTIFICATION OBTAINABLE - Dougan Clark
Chapter 2 of his Book: The Theology of Holiness

Entire sanctification is an act of God's grace by which inbred sin is removed and the heart made holy. Inbred sin or inherited depravity is the inward cause of which our outward sins are the effects. It is the bitter root of which actual sins are the bitter fruits. It is the natural evil tendency of the human heart in our fallen condition. It is the being of sin which lies back of the doing of sin. It is that within us which says No, to God, and Yes, to Satan. It exists in every human being that comes into the world as a bias or proclivity to evil. It is called in the New Testament, the flesh, the body of sin, our old man, sin that dwelleth in me, and the simple term sin in the singular number. In the Old Testament it is called sin and iniquity. "Behold," says David, "I was shapen in iniquity and in sin did my mother conceive me." And when the Seraph brought the live coal and laid it upon the mouth of Isaiah, the prophet, his words were, "Lo, this hath touched thy lips and thine iniquity is taken away and thy sin purged."

But God has in every age and in every dispensation required His children to be holy. And to be holy signifies the destruction or removal of inbred sin, nothing more and nothing less and nothing else than that. How this is accomplished will be discussed further on, but here we say that the removal of innate depravity is entire sanctification, and that God has most surely made provision in the atonement of Jesus Christ for the removal of innate depravity. Therefore, He has made provision for entire sanctification, and, therefore again, this wondrous grace is obtainable. Inbred sin goes back to the fall of man in the garden of Eden. If not as old as the human race, it is at least as old as the fall. Since sin entered through the beguiling of our mother, Eve, by the serpent, inbred sin has existed as a unit of evil in every child of Adam and Eve. The only exception is the man, Christ Jesus, the God man, the Divine man, the promised seed that should bruise the serpent's head. But as He, the Lord Jesus Christ, was manifested to destroy the works of the devil, and as inbred sin is one of the works of the devil, therefore its destruction is provided for in the atonement, and, therefore, still again, entire sanctification is obtainable.

A Message to Defeated Christians

by Charles G. Trumbull

AS I LOOK over this great audience of God's people, and see the work of the Holy Spirit manifested in faces and in voices as we have been singing together, I would ask whether any of us has ever presumed on God's grace to enable us to go on in sin? Because "where sin abounds, grace does much more abound," have we consciously or unconsciously at times said to ourselves, "Yes, even if I do slip into this sin, God's grace will take care of it?"

I am afraid we must all of us confess that we have done just that. After we have come to the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour and yielded ourselves to Him as Lord, and then in one way or another have been tempted and have slipped into sin, the thought has come to us that after all, His grace will take care of it. Is it not a real peril in the Christian life that we may presume on God's grace thus to go on sinning? May we be honest this afternoon and ask the Holy Spirit to speak plainly, and show us whether we have thus presumed on the grace of God. It Is Not a New Question

At the beginning of the sixth chapter of Romans, Paul asked, "Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?" And instantly he answered it, "God forbid"! This is the gospel to Christians. It is the same gospel as to the unsaved, for just as God says to the unsaved that the death of His Son paid the penalty of their sins and they may be saved by faith in Him, so He says to us in the fifth of Romans, "If, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life." That is the gospel to Christians -- that the grace of God is offered to us, not to go on sinning, but to be kept from sinning.

Light and DarknessLight-from-Darkness

by Roy Hession

On what basis can we have real fellowship with God and our brother? Here I John 1:7 has come afresh to us. ” I f we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the Blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, cleanseth us from all sin.” What is meant by light and darkness is that light reveals, darkness hides. When anything reproves us, shows us up as we really are - that is light. ” Whatsoever doth make manifest is light.”(Eph.5:13) But whenever we do anything or say anything (or don’t say anything) to hide what we are or what we’ve done - that is darkness.

Now the first effect of sin in our lives is always to make us try and hide what we are. Sin made our first parents hide behind the trees of the garden and it has had the same effect on us ever since. Sin always involves us in being unreal, pretending, duplicity, window dressing, excusing ourselves and blaming others - and we can do all that as much by our silence as by saying or doing something. This is what the previous verse calls ” walking in darkness.” With some of us, the sin in question may be nothing more than self-consciousness (anything with ” I ” in it is sin) and the hiding, nothing more than an assumed heartiness to cover that self-consciousness; but it is walking in darkness none the less.

In contrast to all this in us, verse 5 of this chapter tells us that ” God is light,” that is, God is the All-revealing One, who shows up every man as he really is. And it goes on to say, ” In Him is no darkness at all,” that is, there is absolutely nothing in God which can be one with the tiniest bit of darkness or hiding in us.

Quite obviously, then, it is utterly impossible for us to be walking in any degree of darkness and have fellowship with God. While we are in that condition of darkness, we cannot have true fellowship with our brother either - for we are not real with him, and no one can have fellowship with an unreal person. A wall of reserve separates him and us.

The Double Need and the Double Cure

Thomas Cook
Chapter 4 of his Book: New Testament Holiness

The reason why many do not apprehend the true nature of the salvation of Jesus Christ is because they do not understand the true nature of sin. Defective views of sin lead to incorrect views of privilege. What we think of the Atonement depends greatly upon our view of the evil which made it necessary.
Without the fullest information about sin, no man can have the fullest information about himself; or, what is still more important, without understanding sin no man can ever understand God and His
dealings with us. The man who has felt his guilt most deeply always appreciates most the value of Christ’s redeeming work. Sin has many aspects, but there are two primary forms in which it exists. We can form no adequate conception of its nature, nor of the remedy God has provided, unless we look at it from these two points of view. We must discriminate between guilt and depravity.
